FIRE crews were called to Clacton Airfield after reports of an accident involving a light aircraft.

Four fire engines rushed to the scene of the accident, in which a man was hurt, shortly after 1.45pm yesterday.

However, when they arrived the man, who is understood to come from South Essex, had been taken to hospital from the airfield in West Road, Jaywick.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said the accident was not thought to be serious.

“We were called to the incident at 1.48pm. We mobilised four appliances.

“However, when we arrived on the scene the man had been taken to into the care of the ambulance service.

“A plane was reported to have tipped over.”

The man, who was in his 40s, is understood to have suffered cuts to his face.

A spokesman for the air Accident Investigation Branch of the Department (AAIB) of Transport today said that it had been informed of the accident.

“The AAIB is investigating this matter through correspondence.

“We are unable to comment further until our report is published and we have completed the investigation.

“We are unable to give an indication of how long this will take.”

Nobody form Clacton Airfield was available for comment today.
