POLICE have tonight closed one lane of the A14 after a lorry collided with a bridge, sending debris scattering across the carriageway.

The incident happened at 8.45pm on the westbound carriageway of the A14 at Nacton.

Police said the lorry hit the bridge before coming to a stop a few metres beyond it.

No one was injured but a clear-up operation is underway to clear the road of debris.

Structural engineers and the Highways Agency are also on the way to the incident to assess the damage to the bridge.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said: "The lorry was coming westbound when it hit the bridge. It stopped just past the bridge."

Part of the lorry's load was strewn across the road.

Police have closed one lane of the westbound carriageway of the A14 until further notice.
