The incident, which blocked the road, happened at 10.25am today and caused major delays for motorists travelling in both directions.

The vehicle crossed the carriageway, blocking the Ipswich-bound side of the road and partially shutting the southbound side as well.

It is believed that the lorry driver, who is thought to be in his 50s, suffered a medical episode at the wheel.

Police, the East of England Ambulance Service along with fire crews from Ipswich East, Princes Street and Hadleigh attended the scene.

Four hazardous area reponse team (HART) vehicles and an air ambulance were also in attendance.

The driver, who was found unconscious, was taken to Ipswich Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment. The extent of his injuries is unknown.

The incident resulted in massive traffic hold ups on one of the main routes in and out of Suffolk with vehicles completing u-turns to find alternative routes.

There were also reports of extra traffic in Ipswich along with the villages of Copdock and Washbrook as motorists tried to avoid the accident.

The lorry was recovered from the road just after 1pm. One lane of the northbound carriageway was reopened around midday, while one lane of the southbound carriageway was reopened at 1:45pm.

The scene was declared clear at shortly after 3.30pm.

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 10.35am today, June 27, to reports of a road traffic incident on the A12 at Copdock, Ipswich.

“We sent two ambulance crews, an ambulance officer, four hazardous area response team (HART) vehicles and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance to the scene. They treated a man believed to be in his 50s who was unconscious, with unknown injuries. He was then taken to Ipswich Hospital by land ambulance for further care.”
