An Essex man has been charged with murder by police investigating the murder of a woman in the county.

Factory worker Matthew Smith, 23, of Wood Corner Caravan Park in Maldon, was charged on Saturday night following the death of a woman in Booth Place, Burnham on Friday afternoon, an Essex Police spokesman said.

He is set to appear before magistrates in Chelmsford tomorrow morning. He has been remanded in police custody until his appearance in court.

Police launched a murder inquiry after a 23-year-old woman was found dead inside a property in Booth Place. Officers were called shortly after 3.50pm on Friday following reports the woman had been found collapsed.

Officers and ambulance crews attended but the woman, from the local area, had died.

On Saturday, Detective Chief Inspector Martin Pasmore, from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, who is leading the investigation, said: “This is a very sad and distressing incident where a young woman has lost her life in tragic circumstances.”

Reportedly, the 23-year-old woman was a mum-of-two who was pregnant at the time of her death.
