A man has been arrested after a crash today in which a 91-year-old woman was killed when her bicycle collided with a lorry.

A man has been arrested after a crash today in which a 91-year-old woman was killed when her bicycle collided with a lorry.

The crash happened at around 8.20am on Frinton Road in Kirby Cross at the junction with Frietuna Road.

The woman was riding her pedal bike from Thorpe when it collided with a large heavy goods vehicle.

The 45-year-old driver of the Scania lorry, who is from Frinton, has been arrested on suspicion of careless driving and was released on police bail until October 18 while inquiries are carried out.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Colchester General Hospital with a serious head injury and died earlier this afternoon.

Road closures were in place on Frinton Road, Frietuna Road and Laburnum Crescent for several hours causing lengthy delays for motorists in the area.

Police and fire services are investigating the crash and are appealing for anyone who might have witnessed the crash to contact the road policing unit at Stanway on 0300 333 4444.
