A Suffolk man has begun fundraising events which ends with a gruelling cycle for charity.

Cameron Wheeler, 19, from Tuddenham, is raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, which supported his brother Alistair, who died last November and started events with a sponsored fun run for pupils at Queen’s House Pre-Preparatory School on Tuesday.

Mr Wheeler put off his A level exams for a year to spend time with his brother when the family knew there was limited time for him to live.

He said: “My brother was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the start of my final year at Woodbridge School and I decided it was more important to take time out from school and spend it with Alistair and all our family.

“Alistair’s positive approach to his illness was absolutely inspiring and meant we could all spend an amazing summer together and were lucky enough to build up some very special memories which will never be forgotten.

“Because he was only 23 when he was diagnosed he was supported through the Teenage Cancer Trust and was treated in one of their specialist units in Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

“This unit blows any hospital ward expectation out of the water.

“It has everything a young person in such a difficult situation would want and enabled my brother to meet other young cancer patients in a similar situation to him.”

This academic year Mr Wheeler has been working as a teaching assistant at Queen’s House, the pre-preparatory school for Woodbridge School and is doing his own studying for his A2 exams this summer.

Mr Wheeler is hosting a quiz night and raffle at the Holiday Inn Hotel at Ransomes Europark with all money raised going to the charity on February 28.

The finale of the fundraising effort takes place when Mr Wheeler and two friends, Tom Caraccio-Hewitt and Scott Girling, take part in a ‘Death Valley Cycle Challenge’ in the South California Desert in Nevada in November.

They will cover 420km over five days and they hope to reach the £12,000 target for the charity.

Mr Wheeler said: “We have so far raised £3000 towards the target and with a number of events and the cycle ride I hope we will achieve our target and maybe go beyond it.”
