A MOTORIST has today died after he suffered serious head injuries in a two-vehicle collision.

The man was said to be a critical condition following the head-on crash near Long Melford on Saturday morning and needed to be rescued from his black Seat Ibiza.

A spokesman for Suffolk police this afternoon said the man, whose name and age has not been released, had died in Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge.

Firefighters, police, two ambulance crews, three doctors and the East Anglian Air Ambulance were dispatched to the scene - just off the A134 in the small hamlet of Bridge Street, near Alpheton - shortly after 8.40am on Saturday.

Two people were reported to be seriously hurt and were trapped in the vehicles - a purple Mercedes and the Seat Ibiza - before being cut out by fire crews.

Police are urging anyone who may have seen the Seat to come forward, in particular the driver of a British School of Motoring car who is thought to have passed the vehicle before the accident.

Anyone with information should call the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01473 613500.
