A driver has been handed a suspended jail sentence following a horror crash in Elmstead.

Terence Smith, 72, of Harwich Road, Great Bromley, was arrested after a car and a cyclist collided in Bromley Road, Elmstead in September 2017.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the cyclist – a 31 year-old man – died at the scene.

Smith pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on October 2, and was handed a one month prison sentence suspended for six months.

He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.
