AN INVESTIGATION is under way after a 53-year-old man was killed in a crash on the A12 in Suffolk.

The road was closed for more than three hours in both directions at Blythburgh following the accident, which happened at 2.35pm yesterday.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said it involved a grey Maserati, travelling northbound, and a Range Rover, travelling southbound.

She confirmed that a 53-year-old man from the Lowestoft area - who was driving the Maserati - was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is expected the man will be named during the weekend once formal identification has taken place and his next of kin have been informed.

Motorists were diverted onto the A145 towards Beccles and around Wangford village while the accident was cleared up and officers investigated the cause of the crash.

The road eventually reopened at 5.42pm.

The spokeswoman said police were appealing for information and anyone who thought they could help should contact the serious collision unit on 01473 613500.
