Newmarket’s National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art has been named Suffolk Museum of the Year.

The centre, which was officially opened by the Queen last year, beat competition from East Anglia Transport Museum, Dunwich Museum, West Stow Anglo Saxon Village, Lowestoft Museum and Gainsborough’s House.

Meanwhile, the award for Family Friendly museum went to Moyse’s Hall Museum; Museum Object of the Year was the dwile flonking trophy at Halesworth and District Museum; West Stow Anglo Saxon Village picked up the Learning and Access Award, and Merit Awards were presented to The Red House and East Anglia Transport Museum.

Last year’s Museum of the Year title went to Southwold Museum.

This year’s award was supported by The East Anglian Daily Times, BBC Radio Suffolk and the University of Suffolk.

The Summer in Suffolk Museums campaign saw more than 30 museums across the county offering a wide range of holiday activities and events for family visitors.
