SHEFFIELD United and Wales footballer Ched Evans has been jailed for five years.

The 23-year-old former Norwich City player was found guilty of raping a woman, who was “too drunk to consent” to sex, at Caernarfon Crown Court today.

He went on trial alongside Port Vale defender Clayton McDonald, also 23 - who was found not guilty of rape.

The victim, a 19-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told police she has no memory of the incident, which happened in a North Wales hotel last May. The prosecution said she was too drunk to consent to sexual intercourse.

Evans, of Ashtree Gardens, Millhouse Green, Penistone, South Yorkshire, and McDonald, of Marys Gate, Crewe, Cheshire, both admitted having sex with the woman but denied rape and said she was “in control of her actions”.

The footballers met when they were 10 years old and shared digs while they attended the Manchester City youth academy.
