A VAN driver has been killed and a teenage motorist is fighting for his life after two horrific road accidents on the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire border.

A man died yesterday morning after his Ford Transit van ploughed into the back of an articulated lorry parked in a lay-by on the A14, near Newmarket.

The exact cause of the crash is not known at this stage, but it is believed the van was travelling at speed and the driver was killed instantly.

Last night, an ambulance service spokesman said: "There is no way anyone could have survived the crash."

Police, fire and ambulance crews were all called to the accident at Snailwell Hill, just outside Newmarket, close to the A14/A142 junction, just after 6am.

Paramedics found the van driver trapped in his vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor.

The lorry driver, who was not injured, pulled into the lay-by and was having a rest when the blue Transit mysteriously veered off the main road ploughed straight into the back of the heavy goods vehicle, which was carrying frozen foods.

Two lanes of the westbound carriageway towards Cambridge had to be closed for several hours while accident investigators carried out a detailed examination of the area.

Cambridgeshire police spokesman, Insp Justin Beaumont, said: "The driver of the transit was alone in his vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Our road policing unit is now trying to piece together exactly how this accident took place."

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old from Newmarket was fighting for his life last night after his car veered off a country road on Saturday evening.

A Red Peugot 106, which was being driven by the teenager, left the small country road – linking the B1502 and the A1304, between West Wratting, near Haverhill and Six Mile Bottom, just outside Cambridge – at around 8pm on Saturday evening.

Emergency services from Suffolk and Cambridge attended the scene and had to close the road for nearly five hours while the man was released from his vehicle.

He had suffered multiple injuries and was taken by ambulance to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. Last night police described his condition as "critical".

Anyone with any information or who may have witnessed either accident is asked to call Cambridgeshire police on 01480 456111.
