A passenger was stopped at Stansted Airport after 5kg of opium was found in the false bottom of a suitcase.
Border Force officers discovered the class A drug on Saturday when the woman arrived on a flight from Turkey.
Dean Milton, Border Force assistant director at Stansted, said: “The estimated street value of the opium is still to be established, but it is safe to say that this seizure is worth many thousands of pounds.”
The National Crime Agency has charged Polish Ewelina Kukielka, 20, with no fixed UK address, in connection with the find.
She was remanded in custody to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on April 11.
