A SUFFOLK village is repairing to stage a second culinary coup in as many years.

The Orford Food Revolution Day is rallying to return on Saturday, May 18, in support of the local primary school’s Kitchen Garden Project, backed by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

The village will be closed to traffic to allow food experts and traders to commandeer the market square and surrounding streets from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

The event is part of the TV chef’s annual day of awareness for better food education and cooking skills across the world. His Kitchen Garden project was piloted at Orford Primary School, where cookery teacher Kate Kilburn has been selecting recipes, planning lessons and sourcing all ingredients for the last four years.

This year’s event will feature stalls selling fresh vegetables including local asparagus and strawberries, fresh pork and lamb, cheese, bread, cakes, chutneys and preserves, smoked fish, chocolates, apple juice, coffee and Orford Primary’s own strawberry jam and tomato pasta.

Meanwhile, vegetarian street food will be available alongside cream teas, bacon buns, fresh oysters and even pigeon burgers.

Visitors can also ask questions and learn tips from people who produce quality local foods and ingredients, and there will be a chance for children to take part in the Great Orford Bake Off competition.

The Town Hall will host a selection of local traders dealing in meats, fish, vegetables and sweet treats, while the village’s other shops will be open as usual and promoting local produce.

All funds raised from the market will go back into the primary school’s ongoing project, with net funds raised from the wider Food Revolution Day initiative going to support food education projects for both children and adults through Jamie Oliver’s foundation projects in the US, UK and Australia.

Last year’s event was launched by hotelier Ruth Watson with sales expert Roger Hipwell and Joanna Brennan of the Pump Street Bakery. A sum of £1,400 was raised for the Orford Primary School project.

Jamie Oliver said: “Food Revolution Day is all about people power. I was amazed and massively inspired by our first global day of action last year, when we managed to get over 1,000 events organised in 664 cities across the world. This year, the response has already been incredible.”
