A man has suffered a serious crash on the A1304 High Street/Barbara Stradbroke Avenue in Newmarket this morning.
Suffolk police officers were called around 5.45am to reports that two vehicles – a white BMW 120 and a blue Ford Fiesta – had been involved on the stretch of road near the Hamilton Road junction.
Police officers were called to the scene, alongside two fire crews from Newmarket and a fire crew from Burwell to help free a motorist from the Fiesta.
A police spokesman said the driver of the Fiesta had been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with serious injuries.
The spokesman added: “The road is expected to be closed for some time and diversions are being put in place.
“The road is currently closed between the junctions with the B1061 Dullingham Road and the roundabout at the A1303 whilst a collision investigation takes place.”
Update: The road reopened just before 1pm.
A spokeswoman from the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called today, January 31, at 5.45am to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction of High Street and Birdcage Walk in Newmarket.
“Two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance crew, and the medical response car from MAGPAS were sent to the scene to help.
“The patient, a man, was sedated at the scene and taken by land ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with head, chest and leg injuries in a serious condition.”
