The collision on the A1120 at Stonham Aspal happened at 10.20pm last night.

Emergency services were called to the scene, about half a mile from the A140, after a black Ford Fusion car was in collision with a silver BMW estate.

The male driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene, and the male driver of the BMW was taken to Ipswich Hospital with leg injuries which police described as serious and life changing.

It is understood that the driver of the Ford was pronounced dead shortly after emergency services arrived at the scene.

Firefighters from Stowmarket, Needham Market and Ipswich were called, and the road was closed while emergency workers tried to assist the casualties in the wreckage of the vehicles.

The road remained closed for several hours while a major crash investigation got under way. It was reopened at 3.30am.

Investigations were continuing today into what caused the collision. Details will be passed to the coroner for an inquest to be held into the death of the Ford driver.

Details about his identity had not been released early today.
