AN ELDERLY man killed last night after he drove the wrong way along the A12 and crashed into a van has this afternoon been named by police.
A spokeswoman for Essex police said the 89-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident near to Ardleigh, Colchester was Clifford Goodman from the Tendring area.
Police believe Mr Goodman joined the A12 on the Suffolk/Essex border and was involved in a number of collisions and near-misses before colliding with a van.
The accident happened at about 8pm, near to Ardleigh, Colchester.
Police officers received a number of simultaneous 999 calls reporting Mr Goodman's car travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway near the Gun Hill junction at Stratford St Mary.
Officers investigating the accident are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them.
