A POLICE officer was shot dead in Northern Ireland overnight.
The officer was called to a report of a disturbance in a Catholic area of Craigavon in County Armagh at about 9.30pm and was shot by a gunman in waste ground as he left his car.
The shooting comes less than two days after two soldiers were killed in an ambush at their base in County Antrim - responsibility for that outrage was claimed by the dissident Real IRA.
No one has so far claimed responsibility for last night's attack, but it has been condemned by politicians on all sides in Northern Ireland.
Alex Maskey, Sinn Fein's police spokesman, said: "I would like to send our condolences to the officer's family and express our disgust and anger that this has happened tonight again, after the weekend."
