POP star Will Young is returning to Ipswich, it has been announced today.

And the singer is expected to sell out the 1,650 seat Regent theatre when he performs later this year.

The 30-year-old will play the St Helen's Street venue on Friday, November 27.

Theatre manager David Mansfield said: “Will Young is a hugely popular artist and a fantastic performer. He performed here in 2004 and again last year and we are delighted to be able to welcome him back to the Regent.

“Will is a class act and this is a major coup for the Regent and a brilliant addition to our autumn programme.”

A politics graduate, Will young rose to fame when the nation tuned in to see him triumph over Gareth Gates in tv's Pop Idol in 2002.

After Pop Idol the star went on to win the Brits Best Breakthrough Act Award and a number of other honours, including Best Artist in the Digital Music Awards in October 2004.

His early hits included Light My Fire, Leave Right Now, and Friday's Child.

In May 2006 he was voted the UK's favourite artist ever in a poll conducted by commercial radio, beating the likes of Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney and the Spice Girls.

Tickets are �35 and go on sale on Friday at 9am.
