Rail passengers using Greater Anglia services to London faced problems at both ends of the working day – but not as a result of the RMT guards’ strike.
Over-running engineering work in Essex caused problems for commuters heading into work in the morning and a broke rail at Bethnal Green delayed trains heading out of the capital during the early evening.
A handful of Greater Anglia services were cancelled or amended because of the strike, but a spokeswoman for the company said the vast majority of services had run without incident.
Temporary conductor/guards operated the 40% of trains that are not driver-only operation and will do so again on Thursday during the second day of the RMT walk-out.
Network Rail engineers were trying to repair the problem at Bethnal Green, but there were delays and cancellations during the rush-hour.
The 48-hour strike is the latest action by RMT conductor/guards over changes to their role with the introduction of new trains in two years’ time.
