“If everyone had a dad like him I don’t think there would be half so many problems in the world.”

Those were the words of Janis Turner, one of the daughters of a Suffolk man who died last month.

Charlie Frost died on August 19 aged 86 following complications after suffering a heart attack.

Mr Frost, who was born in Bramford and lived in Ipswich before moving to Needham Market, where he ran his business, CB Frost Commercials, for 25 years, on the Lion Barn Industrial Estate. He retired to Creeting St Mary.

He was one of seven children and was married to his late wife, Joan, for 56 years.

His daughters, Marilyn Reynolds and Mrs Turner, said he would look after everybody.

Mrs Reynolds said he used to sponsor Ipswich Witches, and also looked after their Polish riders, letting them stay in a caravan in his garden.

Mrs Turner said: “He liked to help everyone. Even when he was in hospital he was more worried about the person opposite him.

“He was protective, caring and generous.”

As well as two daughters, Mr Frost had seven grandchildren.

Mrs Reynolds said he used to be called ‘grandad chips’ to his 23 great-grandchildren, as he would cook sausage, egg, chips and beans for the family.

He would drink in the Sorrell Horse in Barham, where his half-pint glass is still kept behind the bar.

Mrs Turner said: “He was not a man of show, he didn’t brag or boast.

“Everything was shared – that’s how he was. He was a man of the community.”

Mrs Reynolds said: “He said death was the one thing in life that you’re sure of but you never expect it to happen.”

Mrs Turner said: “I feel privileged to have had him for a dad.”

Mr Frost’s funeral is to be held at St Mary’s Church, Bramford, on September 14 at 2.30pm.

Family flowers only but donations can made payable to British Heart Foundation or Cancer Research UK, which should be sent c/o East of England Co-operative Funeral Services, 47 St. Helen’s Street, Ipswich, IP4 2JL.
