Southwold’s new mayor honoured a carnival custom at the town’s annual Charter Fair.

Melanie Tucker, was joined by fellow councillors and town bellman John Barber for a procession on South Green, before climbing aboard the Stocks Funfair dodgems.

The fair charter was read by town clerk Lesley Beevor at the event – the origins of which go back to a charter granted by Henry VII in the 15th century.

Mrs Tucker, whose charities for the year are St Barnabas care home and Southwold Music Trust, said a great deal of fun was had on the day and invited people to help raise funds by booking a place at the mayor’s ball on October 10 at Southwold Golf Club.

She described residents as the “beating heart” of the town, and said she looked forward to working with the community in the coming year.
