COLCHESTER Zoo has scored a double with the birth of its second baby elephant.

The baby boy was born to African elephant Rosa on Mondayat 8am.

Rosa did not show any visible sign of being in labour and her son was born without assistance.

The baby is progressing well and has been seen feeding from its mother.

Its name has not been chosen yet. Keepers are expected to draw up a short list and let the public vote for their favourite name.

The baby elephant has not been on the scales yet but it is estimated it weighs around 13 stone.

Rosa became pregnant after a natural mating with Colchester's bull elephant Tembo.

He is already the father of two other babies, both of which were born after their mothers were artificially inseminated with Tembo's sperm.

One of them was Tanya, who was the first elephant in the world to become pregnant after only one artificial insemination and gave birth to Kito who is now more than a year old.

The pair are both still at the zoo and were put in with Rosa and her new arrival yesterday.
