Hot on the heels of World Cup fever in Brazil, musical acts have been announced for Suffolk’s second Flipside literature, music and arts festival.

The event takes place from October 3-5 at Snape Maltings - the home of Aldeburgh Music - and promises to offer a taste of Brazilian culture for the whole family, with literature, art, food and drink, children’s events and workshops, dancing, cooking, capoeira martial arts and street football.

Heading up the musical line-up at FlipSide 2014 are Grammy-nominated singer Bebel Gilberto, renowned DJ and producer Gilles Peterson, and acclaimed UK fusion group Da Lata.

FlipSide’s Friday night opening will feature seven-piece Da Lata followed by Gilles Peterson performing his Sonzeira DJ set. Bebel Gilberto is set to perform a rare UK show on Saturday evening.

FlipSide founder and director Liz Calder said: “To have the divine Bebel Gilberto here at FlipSide is an absolute thrill. I can’t wait.”

Festival director Genevieve Christie said: “Mixing Brazilian pop royalty Bebel Gilberto with the dance sensibility of Gilles Peterson and Da Lata and the organic rhythms of Brazilian forro, choro and samba, promises to make for a weekend of irresistible music at FlipSide 2014.

“Hearing Gilles Peterson DJ at Brazil Day in Trafalgar Square was a wonderful way to start a Brazilian summer - sunshine, music, carnival!”

Visitors to FlipSide can also expect showcase performances by popular traditional groups Maracatu Estrela do Norte and Forrobamba.

Literary events include Michael Ondaatje and Michel Laub discussing their latest novels, Pauline Melville talking short stories with Tatiana Salem Levy, Margaret Atwood and Ana Maria Machado covering everything from literature to politics, and Sally Gardner in conversation with Benjamin Zephaniah.

There will even be a Brazilian election-day debate on the day of the country’s presidential vote, with former UK Ambassador to Brazil Alan Charlton, social scientist David Lehman, novelist and political commentator Diogo Mainardi and writer Tariq Ali.
