ARMED robbers struck at two stores in west Suffolk last night - launching terrifying attacks on staff with hammers and metal bats and leaving three people injured.

Three men brandishing a variety of metal weaponry attacked workers at the New Mart Newsagents at 7.10pm in Brickfields Avenue, Newmarket.

Two staff were cashing up when the raiders attack them, leaving one with head and hand injuries and the other with head injuries.

Police are connecting the raid to a robbery 40 minutes later at the Londis Store in The Street, Barrow near Bury St Edmunds.

This time they were wielding a shot gun and staff were told to open the safe. As two of the robbers searched the back of the shop they assaulted a third member of staff - hitting him in the face and back.

In both incidents the injuries were not serious but one man was taken to hospital as a precaution, police said.
