Sudbury’s new mayor has started his tenure with an ambitious plan to twin the town with Yanfolila in Mali.

Rob Spivey took the reins at a mayor-making ceremony on Tuesday, having served as deputy last year.

Mr Spivey will be supporting four charities during his year in office – Homestart, the Stroke Association, the Alzheimer’s Society and the Mali Development Group (MDG).

He is vice-chairman of the MDG and said the link would benefit both parties.

“We could have an informal twinning arrangement with the a village in Mali, so we could exchange views and people would get to learn what goes on in Mali and what goes on in Sudbury,” he said.
