A Sudbury primary school’s outdoor space has been transformed after receiving a £12,000 grant from the town’s Tesco store.

Woodhall Primary School was awarded the grant from the supermarket’s Bags of Help scheme – which is money raised from the sale of carrier bags – and used the money to revamp its wildlife garden.

The Friends of Woodhall Primary School instigated the fundraising effort, which prompted the support from the town’s Tesco.

Matthew Fuller, headteacher, said: “The area was in a state of disrepair until our fantastic Friends decided to start fundraising for improvements.

“I was delighted as It was an area I wanted to do more with when I arrived at Woodhall a year ago.

“It opens up our learning environment outside of the classroom and allows us to have a broader forest school curriculum with a dedicated leader.

“The result is we have this great opportunity to improve our children’s social skills, self-esteem, team building and confidence – which will all help them in the classroom.”

Mel Edwards, community champion at Tesco, said: “We are delighted to be supporting all the staff and students at Woodhall Primary School.

“It is fantastic to see first-hand what a difference the Bags of Help scheme has made in our local community.”

The ribbon was cut on the new outdoor space at the school’s autumn fair on Friday.
