Increasing numbers of local authorities are making money from charging to collect garden waste, new figures show.
Suffolk Coastal and Mid Suffolk and Babergh councils are among those that already charge for bin collections, costing homeowners up to £50 per year.
Until this year, Suffolk Coastal had collected garden waste free of charge – but after the county council urged districts to introduce a charge it decided to levy a £43 annual fee.
Suffolk Coastal currently collects about 50,000 tonnes of domestic household waste a year. About one third of this (about 15,000 tonnes) is organic waste.
BBC consumer series Rip Off Britain: Live has shown that 53% of UK councils now levy a charge for collecting green waste, with revenues of £73.9million in 2016/17.
Some 172 councils of the 322 that responded to requests for information levy a charge, with an average cost to residents of £42.40 a year.
