A councillor has spoken of his shock after a man was found in a Haverhill street with multiple stab wounds.
A 36-year-old man was found in Howe Road by police with a number of wounds to his body just before 11.50pm on Thursday.
He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where he currently remains in a “serious but stable” condition.
The victim was spotted in the Queen Street area of Haverhill town centre around 11.15pm before he was found and officers believe it was a targeted attack and there is no wider threat to the community.
A police cordon was put in place in Howe Road at the junctions with Withersfield Road and Arrendene Road, while officers conducted searches and carried out forensic work, along with CCTV and house-to-house enquiries.
The scene was lifted around lunchtime yesterday.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the victim, witnessed an altercation or seen a disturbance in the area of Withersfield or Howe Road to come forward.
The victim is described as 6ft tall, white, of a slim build with short black hair.
He was wearing a light coloured jacket and dark trousers.
David Roach, borough councillor for Haverhill West, said: “It is shocking because we don’t have a lot of this sort of violent crime and knife crime in Haverhill. We’re not used to it.
“Hopefully the police will get to it fairly quickly. Haverhill police are generally pretty good at such things.
“But it is a shock, especially in Howe Road, which is certainly not a place you’d expect something like this to happen.”
Detectives are also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the man around 11.15pm on Thursday in the area of Queen Street.
Enquiries are ongoing and police said the community can expect to see reassurance patrols conducted in the area.
Anyone with information should contact Suffolk police on 101, quoting incident reference 37/2030/19.
This includes anyone driving through the area who has a dash cam fitted in their vehicle.
