CHARITY workers, police officers and sporting stars in Suffolk are among those who will be recognised in the New Year Honours list.

Among those in the county who will be receiving awards is Detective Superintendent Alan Caton, Suffolk Constabulary’s head of public protection.

Det Supt Caton was at the forefront of the prostitution strategy following the murders of five sex workers in Ipswich in 2006, which tackled the problem of prostitution on the streets.

He will receive an OBE for services to the police following the multi-agency approach which is seen as the leader nationally for dealing with the issue and helping women turn their lives around.

Sue Brace, 53, from Felixstowe, will receive an MBE for services to the police for her volunteer work with families of police officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

Mrs Brace began working with the Care of Police Survivors organisation after her sister, Pc Cheryl Lloyd, was killed in a crash while responding to an emergency call in her patrol car in Ipswich, six years ago.

Veteran swimmer Mike Read will also be awarded an MBE in the honours list. The 70-year-old, who lives in Sproughton, has swum the Channel 33 times and was chosen to represent Great Britain in the 1960 Olympics in Rome.
