FIREFIGHTERS tackled a fire in Saxmundham that nearly destroyed a scout hut.

Crews from Saxmundham and Leiston battled for more than an hour to control the flames at the 1st Saxmundham scout hut in Memorial Field.

The blaze broke out shortly after 1am, destroying the roof of the 30 by six metre hut.

Firefighters were on scene until around 2.30am before the area was declared safe.

Earlier on in Saxmundham, a fire was reported at a clothing bank in a car park on Market Square.

A crew from Saxmundham was called to the scene at around 12.45am and had extinguished the blaze by 1am.

Elsewhere, Woodbridge firefighters tackled a chimney fire in Shingle Street.

The fire was reported at a cottage in The Street at 12.31am. Firefighters had the flames under control by 1.20am.
