England football manager Sven-Goran Eriksson will quit the post after this summer's World Cup, the Football Association said tonight.
FA chief executive Brian Barwick had earlier met with Sven, who has led the national side for five years, to discuss newspaper reports in the News of the World that had seen him allegedly make claims of corruption in the top ranks of the game.
In a statement issued tonight, Mr Barwick said: “The FA and Sven felt it was important to clarify his future. This is for the benefit of everyone connected with English football, especially the fans.
“As I have said before, our main objective is giving Sven and the England team the best chance of achieving success at the World Cup.
“Sven is definitely the man to lead us in Germany.”
For his part, Sven said he remained committed to the job and said he still had the full backing of the FA and the players.
“This summer is the culmination of everything we have been working towards over the last five years. Let's go and win the World Cup.”
