At around 9am, there was a collision between a blue Ford Fiesta, a black Vauxhall Passat and a black Hyuandai i10.

The road was partially blocked in both directions for several hours while the vehicles were recovered.

A fuel spillage also needed to be cleared by the Highways Agency.

Four ambulances, an ambulance officer and a hazardous area response team were all sent to the incident.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service tasked an appliance from Coggeshall and one from Braintree to the scene, and used specialist cutting equipment to release four people by 10.38am, who were left in the care of paramedics.

One man was taken to Colchester Hospital with pelvic pain. Three further patients were taken to Broomfield Hospital – one man with back pain and a male and a female both with back and neck pain.

None of the injuries were thought to have been life threatening.

All vehicles had been recovered and police had left the scene shortly after midday.
