A Thurston Community College student has been crowned the winner of this year’s Suffolk Libaries’ Book Mastermind competition.

Katy Shaw triumphed over eight students from schools across the county at the 23rd annual Book Mastermind event, held at Stratford St Andrew.

Pupils answered questions on their chosen novel before being tested by a general knowledge round.

Katy’s chosen book was Divergent by Veronica Roth and the Thurston student pipped runner-up Anna Cook, from Debenham High School, to the top spot.

Lucy Martin, from Ixworth Free School, finished third.

Other schools whose students made the final included, Sir John Leman High School, St Joseph’s College, Thomas Gainsborough High School, Copleston High School, Stowupland High School and Ipswich Academy.

Following the competition, everyone who came along enjoyed two talks by children’s authors William Hussey and Francesca Armor-Chelu.

Krystal Vittles, Suffolk Libraries development manager and children and young people’s lead, said: “Book Mastermind is celebration of books and reading and once again all the students and schools who took part have done themselves proud.

“It was great to see so many young people with such great enthusiasm for books and who took the competition so seriously.

“I’d like to thank everyone who helped to support and run the event including the schools, students and our two inspiring guest authors.”
