MOTORISTS in Essex faced severe delays this evening after a series of separate incidents caused tail backs during the rush hour.
Police said reports of a crash and a broken down vehicle on the A12 had occurred at the same time resulting in long queues as traffic built up.
The incidents happened at about 4.20pm when a two-vehicle accident on the London bound carriageway at the last turn off to Witham coincided with broken down car near the Hatfield Peveral turn off.
A Toyota collided with a Volkswagen in the fast lane and police said there were reports of one of the vehicles spinning round on the carriageway.
A police spokeswoman said: “A lot of people were affected police units did not leave the scene until 5.37pm and despite there being no road closures there was a huge build up of traffic as several tail backs merged into one.”
