Police officers, dogs and a riot van have been seen attending a traveller encampment set up on an Essex village recreation ground.

People in Marks Tey, near Colchester, reported seeing travellers trying to access the village hall recreation ground this morning.

Residents said six police cars, two dog units and a riot van were in attendance - and had blocked access to the road.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We were called with reports of an unauthorised traveller encampment at a site in Old London Road, Marks Tey at around 11.30am today.

“Officers attended and the encampment had moved off the site by 1.05pm.”
