A town-wide arts festival returns for its second outing this summer, with appearances from three luminaries of the electronic music world.

The Woodbridge Art and Music Event (WAME) will again take place in venues across the town over the weekend of August 8 – with a number of acts already signed up to perform.

Phil Hartnoll, one half of electronic act Orbital, is set to headline alongside Coldcut’s Matt Black and 1960s genre pioneers White Noise.

Brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll rose to fame as Orbital in the mid-nineties. They decided to stop operating as a unit at the end of last year but pursued new artistic endeavours - with Phil having just returned from recording in Thailand and due to make a rare UK festival appearance in Woodbridge, featuring new material and never heard before Orbital tracks, as well as classic club hits.

He will be joined by White Noise, formed in 1969 by David Vorhaus, Brian Hodgson, Peter Zinoviev and Deliah Derbyshire, from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Their first LP, An Electric Storm, is considered the first proper UK electronic album.

Matt Black, member of electronic duo Coldcut, will also be joining the bill. He and Jonathan Moore’s debut single, Say Kids What Time Is It, was an early sample-based hit in the UK, while their work with Yaz, for whom they penned and produced such hits as The Only Way is Up, saw them dominate the charts in the late eighties and early nineties, before they set up the Ninja Tune record label.

DJ and festival organiser, Ben Osborne said: “We’re really pleased to have David Vorhaus and White Noise involved. They’re pretty close to ground zero of modern electronic music. And it’s incredible to then be able to add Phil Hartnoll from Orbital and Matt Black from Coldcut to this mix. That’s a pretty sem inal line-up in British electronics.

“But of course the festival isn’t about any one genre. So not only have we got an exciting collection of singer-songwriters, bands, folk acts, DJs and hip-hop artist to announce, we’re also looking to increase the art and literature sides of the event.

“The aim of WAME is to bring a mixture of high quality acts and cross platform art into the area, while also supporting and promoting those who are active in the local scene, so we very much want to make it an annual fixture.”

WAME takes place in Elmhurst Park on August 8, and at several other venues over the weekend. Early bird tickets go on sale soon. Visit woodbridgeartandmusic.weebly.com.
