TWO babies have been treated in hospital after smoke from a burning vehicle drifted into their house.

Fire crews were sent to reports of a fire in Jenner Mead, Chelmsford at about 10.30 last night.

A van parked in a diveway was alight, with smoke from the blaze going into the property.

Essex County Fire and Rescue said there were two babies inside who seemed to be affected by smoke and an ambulance was called just after 11.15pm.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance service confirmed that a rapid response vehicle was on the scene within five minutes, backed up a minute later by an ambulance. Two further ambulances also attended.

The babies were taken to Broomfield Hospital for further care as a precaution because they had inhaled smoke.

The fire was extinguished by 11.30pm.
