BOTH the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the A14 in Cambridgeshire have now reopened following a serious collision involving a tanker.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash at 6.26am where a chemical tanker had overturned on the westbound carriageway between J16 and J15.

It resulted in the closure of the carriageway in both directions west of Huntingdon.

Callum Faint, station commander at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Firefighters arrived to discover the tanker on its side, with an ethanol substance leaking from it.

“Crews used absorbent granules and an environmental grab pack to cover the nearby drains to stop the leaking liquid from entering the drains.”

A total of seven ambulances attended including three from the hazardous area response team.

An ambulance service spokesperson said: “All emergency crews worked very well in difficult circumstances as potentially harmful chemicals were leaking from the tanker.

“Crews treated a man in his 40s with a non-serious head injury and transported him to Hinchingbrooke Hospital for further treatment.”

The road was closed in both directions between J13 and J21 and effectively from its junction with the A45 at Thrapston and the A1 at Brampton just west of Huntingdon.
