Crews have tackled a cell fire at a Suffolk prison in the early hours.

Appliances from Wickhambrook, Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds were sent to HM Prison Highpoint in Stradishall, near Haverhill, at about 12.30am.

Firefighters used a hosereel, breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera at the scene.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “Staff at HMP Highpoint quickly extinguished a small cell fire which started at around 12.20am today. The fire brigade attended as a matter of routine but no staff or prisoners were injured.

“The incident will be referred to the police and the prison will also investigate.”
