A group of super slimmers from Ipswich descended on a town centre charity shop to donate dozens of bags of clothes they no longer need.

Slimming World members from the town managed to collect enough unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories to fill 280 bags for Cancer Research UK during the organisation’s “clothes throw” campaign.

Including members in Mid Suffolk and Suffolk Coastal, more than 500 bags have been collected, with each bag expected to raise about £30 for the charity.

Emma Howells, a team developer and consultant who runs the Ravenswood Primary School Slimming World group, was among the first to hand over bags at the charity’s shop in Upper Brook Street on Friday.

She said: “Members were more than willing and really embraced the fabulous fundraising campaign by donating their unwanted clothes to help such a worthwhile cause.

“They jumped at the chance to recycle the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to help raise money for Cancer Research UK.”

The “clothes throw” campaign is a nationwide fundraising drive by Slimming World.

Last year, slimmers donated nearly £890,000 worth of stock.

Cancer Research UK provides support and also funds research into the disease.

Emma added: “One in three of us are affected by cancer and being overweight increases the risk of developing the disease, so we’re determined to do anything we can do to help fight cancer and help people lead healthier lives.

“At group each week I support members to make healthy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that they can keep up for life.

“I’m delighted that our members are always so keen to pull together and support local good causes.

“Cancer touches so many people’s lives so most people are keen to contribute.

“The money raised will support Cancer Research UK’s research that helps to find new treatments and, in the long term a cure for cancer.
