A woman was punched and sprayed in the face with an unknown substance during a robbery in Essex.

The victim, aged in her 30s, was withdrawing money from a cash machine in Magdalen Road, Clacton-on-Sea, at around 12.15am today when she was approached by a man and a woman.

The woman sprayed her in the face with an unknown substance and demanded money from her.

Both the man and the woman also punched the victim in the face.

The two robbers then fled the scene empty handed in a small red hatchback car.

A spokeswoman for Essex Police said: “The woman was treated by paramedics and there is nothing to indicate the substance she was sprayed with was acid.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information about this incident to contact Clacton Criminal Investigation Department on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
