NHS North West, a regional strategic health authority, said the Canadian woman is being treated at an undisclosed hospital in Manchester.
She is believed to have been visiting friends in Sale, an area of south Manchester. It is not known if she visited Mexico recently.
Anyone who feels unwell and suspects they have flu is advised to visit the NHS Direct website at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk.
