Today is World Obesity Day 2017 and figures released has shown an increase in obesity in young people, but what can we do to prevent it?

Research has revealed that one in 10 people aged between five and 19 are obese in the UK.

Young people who are overweight are more likely to remain like that in their adult years, which could cause serious problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and cancer.

Around the world, there are approximately 124million people between the same age group that are overweight.

The figures, from The Lancet, came from extensive research on more than 128.9 million participants around the world aged five and above, by conducting 2,416 population-based studies that involved the measuring of height and weight.

World Obesity Day was first established in 2015 in the hope of raising awareness of the obesity crisis around the globe and encourage people to take the steps to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

This year, they hope to encourage governments, health-care providers, insurers and other organisations to invest in obesity treatment, intervention and prevention.
