VILLAGERS have launched a fundraising bid to help pay for vital repairs to their Grade I listed church and maintain it for future generations.
Work is already under way to improve the tower of St Mary’s in Worlingworth.
Once that is complete the next phase is to reinstate the flint in the flushwork panels.
Charlie Abbott, who sits on Worlingworth’s parochial church council, said: “These panels are considered of national importance by the parish architect - with an extraordinary range of images - and have been well documented by respected church historians.
“However, flint knapping is a very specialised craft and consequently very expensive.
“We would be most grateful if anyone would consider sponsoring a panel or part of one - perhaps in memory of a family member or if they have links with St Mary’s from the past?”
The work - including the repairs to the tower - is expected to cost in the region of 35,000.
St Mary’s Church was originally built with money from the Abbots of Bury.
Anyone who would like to help should contact church wardens Shirley Rutterford on 01728 628710 or Bert Stanford on 01728 628474.
