HARRY Redknapp’s Champions League experience would have swayed Sir Geoff Hurst to have given the Spurs boss the England job,.

Redknapp looks set to miss out on the Three Lions hot-seat with Roy Hodgson poised to agree a deal with the FA.

However Hurst, who won the World Cup under former Ipswich Town manager Sir Alf Ramsey, believes Redknapp would have been an ideal candidate.

“I always thought the England job should be taken by the best man for the job, regardless of nationality,” said the 70-year-old..

“But after both Sven Goran-Eriksson and Fabio Capello were highly-paid but not very successful, I think the next man has to be English.

“Harry would be my first choice as he has that bit more Champions League experience which is the closest thing you can get to international football.

“The job he has done at Tottenham has been unbelievable and I am surprised he has not been approached.

“But Roy (Hodgson) is highly respected in the industry and deserves an interview.”

Meanwhile, former England and Ipswich Town skipper Mick Mills thinks managing England now involves much more than just leading the team in qualifying and tournaments.

“I think that Harry would see the England job as one where he qualified for and tried to win tournaments whereas I think the FA have always been looking for an overlord figure for their new football (development) centre at Burton,” said Mills.

“I hope the FA have earmarked Roy to be England manager first and foremost.”
