The 41-year-old is a free agent, following his release from West Ham, and he is keen to prolong his 23-year professional career.
The news follows the signing of Mark Yeates for an undisclosed six-figure fee from Tottenham, and MK Dons target man Clive Platt for a fee believed to be £300,000.
U's Chief Executive, Marie Partner said: “These are the first two signings (Yeates and Platt) in what will be a very busy campaign in securing the club's squad for next season's push in the Championship.
"And there is a great deal of exciting news to come.”
