COLCHESTER'S first-ever game in the Coca-Cola Championship will see the U's visit relegated Birmingham City - and an immediate reunion with midfielder Neil Danns, joined Brum earlier this week in a £500,000 deal.
It is a mouthwatering start for the U's to face a team who last season were playing two leagues above them in the Barclays Premiership.
Colchester are due to entertain Ipswich on September 30 with the return match scheduled for Portman Road on January 20.
Southend will visit Layer Road on November 25 and will go to Roots Hall on April 7.
For full fixtures see tomorrow's EADT.
