BLUES boss Joe Royle has backed Darren Currie to do the business for Town if the opportunity arises once more, writes Derek Davis.

Currie is Royle's only cash buy and the £250,000 he splashed out on the Brighton winger looks money well spent overall.

But his glaring injury- time miss at Leeds left everyone holding their heads in despair after he had been brilliantly teed up by Darren Bent.

But Royle refused to make him the scapegoat after Town blew the chance of closing down their automatic promotion rivals.

He said: "Darren normally puts them away with either foot. I wouldn't have wanted anyone else in that position.

"Shefki Kuqi has missed one that was just as easy in the first half while Tommy Miller has had a shot blocked and another has drifted wide.

"It was one of those days where it was not going to be because they have not caused a problem in 90 minutes and the one they scored came from a bread and butter cross that we should have dealt with."

Royle was more upset with the way his side threw away their lead within a minute of Shefki Kuqi scoring.

He said: "We dominated the game really while they have had one shot on goal and scored.

"We have missed some great chances and had a couple blocked.

"The biggest disappointment for me was that Leeds' goal came straight after we had scored and that happens too often."

Royle congratulated Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy after they won promotion and highlighted the difference between the two sides.

He said: "The reason we score so many goals is because we have so many attack-minded players whereas when the opposition get the ball too many don't think it is in their contract to get it back.

"The reason Sunderland are going up is because everyone defends. But that is statement rather than a moan because they have been terrific."

With Wigan drawing it means Town could still finish second if they win both games and hope the Latics fail to pick up more than three points from their games at Preston and at home to Reading.
