MATT Elliott played down his part in Ipswich's result revival and is convinced they will finish in the top six, even if he is not here to see it.

The on-loan Leicester City defender has not ruled out staying beyond the initial one-month spell but admitted he was enjoying himself.

Two wins have seen Ipswich move within two places of the top six, behind Sunderland and Millwall on goal difference, and Elliott hopes a third win in a row when Town visit bottom club Wimbledon next week can give them the impetus needed to reach the play-offs.

He said: "I have always kept half a lookout for Ipswich's results and I always expect them to do well.

"They always play attractive and dangerous football and get at teams. So when you see they are not getting the results they should I'm surprised.

"Hopefully we will now get this run going and get in the play-off positions where we should be at the very least.

"Irrespective of whether I'm here or not I will be amazed if Ipswich are not in the top six come the end of the season.

"This team has a chance of beating anyone in this division and if we can get on a roll that will give everyone confidence going towards the end of the season and hopefully into the play-offs."

While the 35-year-old is keeping his options open, his steadying influence has already won him an army of fans and Town have won two games.

He said: "If I have had an influence all well and good but I think they would have won anyway.

"It is early days to talk about extending the loan, so we will take it one stage at a time. I have come down for a month initially, which I'm delighted to. It is lovely to be asked as it is a nice feeling to be wanted and I have not had that for a while."

A brief conversation with Town's on-loan-to-Leicester striker Marcus Bent and popular ex-Town star James Scowcroft confirmed what Elliott already suspected about the Blues.

He said: "I spoke briefly with Benty and Scowy and they confirmed what I knew already. It is a very good club with a very good manager and very good players. They said I would enjoy myself and so far that's been the case."

The former Scotland defender and Foxes skipper Elliott already knows the likes of Jim Magilton, who he played with at Oxford United, and has been impressed with his new teammates after seeing them at close quarters.

He said: "It is a good mix of youth and experience and the youngsters have shown what a handful they are and they are only going to get better.

"A couple of hat-tricks won't do their confidence any harm. There are also plenty of old heads who have done well so there is a lot of variety."

He admitted it was not vintage Ipswich but the 4-1 win was a good job in difficult conditions.

Elliott said: "It was not a typical Ipswich performance but the wind had a big part in that and there were a few errors of judgement.

"It was not the free-flowing game you would normally associate with Ipswich but then it was a 4-1 victory and we will take that any day. Perhaps we were fortunate with a couple of goals but we still deserved to win."

Elliott's initial loan spell is due to expire on April 14, which would allow him to be available for games against Wimbledon, West Bromwich Albion, Rotherham and Sunderland.

An extension would take in Gillingham, Forest, Sheffield United, Cardiff and hopefully the play-offs.
